Fascia is the name we give to the 'wrappers' within your body. Every organ, every muscle, every bone, EVERYTHING has a wrapper. Sometimes we call this Connective Tissue. I'm primarily interested in the Myofascia - myo meaning muscle. Myofascia is the wrapper surround each and every muscle cell, fibre and bundle.
Think about all the systems in the body and how if each element has a fascia then there will be places where the wrappers merge into or across each other, forming sheets throughout the body. Where you have an injury, or the site of an operation, scar tissue is formed. Scar tissue is thick and fiberous is doesn't flex and stretch like the rest of the tissue in the body. Conditions of life, such as posture, habit and dehydration can create tacky, 'stuck' areas of fascia which don't have as much slide and glide. Where this happens it can create a decrease in smooth fluid movement, pain or discomfort. By encouraging change at the cellular level you create the right conditions for the granular substance in each cell to absorb water and nutrients which promotes cell health and encourages the body to replace damaged/old tissue.
When your body feels comfortable, slinky and free, it frees up a cognitive load, allowing you to be more creative, focussed and content.
So, I'm guessing that you've searched up videos for fascia work, you've seen some scary, painful looking stuff! There are ridiculous ideas that fascia needs to be stripped or blasted into submission. Frankly, this is absolute bs. Why would hurting a body create conditions for change? Well it might promote 'healing' through cell damage but it's a rotten way to go about it!
Myofascial Release does not have to hurt. In fact, you are more likely to experience beneficial effects when its slow, gentle, and targeted correctly. I use very light pressure, very rarely there is some discomfort, but more likely all you'll experience is a floaty feeling and maybe deep relaxation. Some clients have likened it to feeling like your body's melting. When you feel calm and safe your nervous system lets down it's defences and transformation on physical, mental and emotional levels takes place.
Most of us spend a lot of time up in our heads, thinking (sometimes overthinking) about how things ought to be done and what we think is expected of us. Instead of relying on our own skills, brilliances and intuition, we look out into the external environment for cues and guidance. It can feel as though we are being lead through life rather than living it for ourselves.
The word Somatic comes from the Greek 'soma' meaning body. Work by trauma informed therapists such as Besel van der Kalk, Deb Dana, Kimberly Ann Johnson and Peter Levin has offered us great insight into how we hold onto unprocessed events within the tissues of our body. As Levin says 'The body is the page on which life is written'.
In our sessions together, we'll explore how the beliefs you have about yourself affect how you feel in your body and conversely, how you feel physcially in your body can affect your perception of your position, place and deservedness in the world. Together we'll unravel the stories you tell yourself to keep yourself safe, whilst unwittingly keeping you small, stuck and avoiding taking action.
The aim of nervous system regulation is to bring a level of safety to your body so it can produce all and any emotions without fear or shame. You may find greater clarity and decision making because you are no longer locked in a stress response. You may find that you are open to joy and connection more easily. You may also find yourself in the middle of a maelstrom you've been trying to keep bottled for years.
The myth of nervous system regulation is that it's supposed to make you calm. But what if you're always calm because you're actually stuck in a freeze/fawning behaviour loop? What if the real transformation is to feel self confident, worthy and grounded enough that you can process grief or anger and all the gunky feeling that come with that? I have had one client who referred to it as her 'Releasing the Kraken Era' - it gave her the resilience and fire to set her boundaries and be clear about the behaviour she would and would not accept.
You get to claim yourself back. You get to stand up for yourself. And you get to do this whilst being supported and listened to. Sometimes there's a storm to walk through to get to the other side, but it's worth it.

Yep, I know. I'm asking you to commit to taking a half day out of your life once a month for six months.
Does that sound impossible? Ridiculous? Great!
If the thought of taking so much time out feels uncomfortable then ask yourself why. Why would it be crazy to take time away from work to do something for yourself? If you're a business founder or an exec you know you have people relying on you. Every day you're being asked to put in your all. But how are you supposed to stay fresh and innovative in your thoughts and actions if you're running your battery flat, prioritising everyone elses needs and wrestling with the same old limiting beliefs?
Creativity comes from rest, space and new stimulation. It comes from feeling open and untaxed - which is why so many breakthrough ideas come along in the shower or when washing the dishes. It has the potential to create spaciousness required to see the problems in your business from a new angle. A two hour session gives you the time to 'drop the baggage', let your mind and body break free from their shackles and soften. If you allow it, it's magical - what an opportunity to nourish your soul and come back to yourself refreshed and sparkling with energy.
I've been a myofascial release specialist therapist for over 15 years and a self employed massage therapist for over 2 decades. In this time I've had my own studios and worked for others. I've been a sole practitioner and run a team. I've treated world class athletes and worked in football, rugby and cricket. During this time, and having seen hundreds and hundreds (thousands?) of clients.
